Toronto Islamic Group Distributes Book Condoning Wife Beating

Dr. al-Sheha's book promises to benefit men who have problems with "strong willed, demanding and commandeering women."

One thing generally condemned in the West is wife beating. However, one Muslim group is trying to say the practice has some benefits, passing out a book called Women in Islam & Refutation of Some Common Misconceptions in Toronto’s Dundas Square. One quote from the book reads,

Although beating of women is generally forbidden, Islam permits the beating of wives in a restricted and limited sense only as a final solution and acceptable valid reason when all else fails. This is analogous to spanking…

Of course the author of the book, Dr. Abdul-Rahman al-Sheha, justifies wife beating as a type of “wife discipline” sanctioned in the Sharia law, referencing Quran 4:34:

(… As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next,) refuse to share their beds, (and last,) beat them (lightly, if it is useful). But if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Most High, Most Great.)

Dr. Abdul-Rahman al-Sheha breaks down the process into three stages:

  1. First stage: The stage of advice, counseling and warning against Allah’s punishment. A husband must remind his wife of the importance of protecting his rights in Islam…

  2. Second stage: To leave the wife’s bed. Or, if one sleeps in the same bed with her, he will turn his back to her, not touch her, talk to her or have intercourse with her…

  3. Third and final stage: Beating without hurting, breaking a bone, leaving black or blue marks on the body, and avoiding hitting the face or especially sensitive places at any cost…

Then trying to validate the alleged practical side to wife beating he lists the two types of women this practice is supposed to be effective on:

The first type: Strong willed, demanding and commandeering women…

The second type: Submissive or subdued women. These women may even enjoy being beaten at times as a sign of love and concern…

It’s disturbing Dr. Abdul-Rahman al-Sheha not only encourages wife beating, but also says some women even enjoy it. Where are the Canadian feminists in exposing this ‘war on women,’ or better yet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who supposedly champions the ending of violence against women?

It’s interesting the printer of the book is the Muslim World League, a dawah organization (propagating Islam) out of Saudi Arabia. The Muslim World League is not a benign organization: “…a group accused of financing al-Qaeda fronts. The organization’s offshoots have been declared official terrorist organizations by both the State Department and the United Nations.” Money Jihad accuses the group of exporting Wahhabi doctrine and helping build terrorist groups like Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) among other things. This is not a group which respects Western values to say the least.

So we have Muslims in Toronto spreading misogynist doctrine funded by a Saudi group with terrorist links. I don’t think these are the values most Canadians want to see flourish. More individuals and groups need to speak out against this Islamist ‘literature.’
