Resisting Islamist Influence in Europe

Hungary's Prime Minister draws a bright line, while Sweden's Green Party slips away.

Sweden’s Green Party has a problem.  Though the party was originally founded by “Greens” in the sense of environmentalists, it now contains a number of members for whom green is the color of Islam.  One refuses to shake hands with female journalists.  Another has shown Muslim Brotherhood hand signs on television.  Al Jazeera describes the hand signal as a “Rabaa sign,” one that became prominent among Brotherhood members and supporters during fighting in Cairo.  The sign expresses solidarity with pro-Brotherhood protesters killed in clashes with Egyptian security forces. Naturally these members are painting all such criticism as “Islamophobia.”  However, a noted expert raised a troubling parallel.

“People who are close to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is an Islamist party, obviously have a big foothold in the Green Party,” Lars Nicander, a security expert at the Swedish Defence University, told Sweden’s TV4. He compared it to how Soviet agents tried to infiltrate political parties in the West during the Cold War.

The Greens didn’t dismiss his theory outright.

Nor should they.  The Brotherhood has been active in Europe since the end of the Second World War, and has expanded widely with a Cold War-era boost from the Central Intelligence Agency.  They came to enjoy significant access to and influence with major Western governments during that period.  They also erected a substantial network of Islamic organizations across the continent to advance their agenda.  Seeking to subvert the Green Party is simply in line with their history and traditions.

Resisting such influence requires drawing bright lines.  In Hungary the Prime Minister has drawn one such line against Islamization of his society.  Hungary is about the Hungarian language and culture, he said, and thus Islamization is unconstitutional.

“To be clear and unequivocal, I can say that Islamization is constitutionally banned in Hungary,” Orban said in parliament at an event celebrating the fifth anniversary of Hungary’s new constitution, now known as the Basic Law.

Orban was quoting from the National Avowal, the Basic Law’s preamble, which details the country’s commitment “to promoting and safeguarding our heritage, our unique language, Hungarian culture” and the protection of “the living conditions of future generations.”

Hungary maintains that the migrant issue is a matter of national sovereignty.

If he is successful, his country will be at least somewhat insulated against the United Nations-led efforts to settle half a million Syrians in America and Europe in coming months.  These migrants pose significant cultural challenges, such as the child brides who have begun to appear in Scandinavia.  They also create enclaves of support for the Brotherhood and its organizations.  The rise of such enclaves has given the Brotherhood and its organizations a sizable voting bloc in some countries, furthering their influence on those nations’ politics and culture.

The Brotherhood in Europe

Many Brotherhood their leaders immigrated to Europe because the group was suppressed in Egypt following their attempt to overthrow the Nasser government. Foolishly, the CIA saw them as a partner in the Cold War against a godless Soviet Bloc.
