Report From Hizb-ut Tahrir Conference in Ontario

Paramilitary speeches focus on practical steps toward building the caliphate here in America.

Canada is a country where merely speaking out against homosexuality could get one in trouble with the authorities.  Somehow, though, encouraging the overthrow of democracy for an Islamic rule that stones homosexuals is okay.  The latter happened Saturday afternoon at a Muslim conference in Ontario, Canada led by Hizb-ut Tahrir.

What is Hizb-ut Tahrir (HuT)?  They are a transnational Islamic organization dedicated creating an international caliphate ruled by sharia law. Due to its advocacy of the overthrowing of every existing government in the world, it is banned in a number of countries including Germany, Russia, China, Egypt, and Turkey.

The first speaker at the conference was a man named Mostafa, who blamed nationalism and sectarianism as key factors for disunity in the ‘ummah.’  The ‘ummah’ is the worldwide community of Muslims, out of which HuT wants to shape its international caliphate.  Then he warned the audience it was their duty to follow Allah’s commands to bring about a caliphate, citing:

“It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.” — Surat-Al-Ahzab (33), verse 36.

Mostafa then described two key components in building a caliphate:

  1. Winning the public’s hearts and minds; and
  2. Partnering with people of power.

Mostafa gave an idea of what kind of allies to choose when striving for an Islamic State, giving an example of Muhammad’s negotiations with the tribe of Banou-Shayban. When the tribe was questioned about their strength they responded: “We are 1000 men who take weapons of war as our toys, and we care for our horses more than we care for our children.” That answer supposedly won them Muhammad’s favor.  Through this example one can see Mostafa is putting military power as a greater virtue than loving one’s own family. This kind of ruthlessness is indicative of the conquering spirit at the heart of their understanding of proper Islam.

The second speaker of the conference spoke about strengthening the ummah. He stressed the importance of natural (ex. oil, gas) and human resources and the military might they need to protect these resources.  It sounded like a speech for a paramilitary organization, one seeking political change through violence rather than votes.

That is important, because HuT members describe the party’s work as only dealing with the political aspects of Islam, not educational or religious aspects per se.  However, they reveal the totalitarian nature of what they mean by political, declaring, “a political doctrine from which originates a system that deals with all of man’s problems, whether they are political, economic, cultural, social or any other issue for that matter.”  HuT America’s website lays out the party’s view of what stage Muslims are in regarding the establishing of the caliphate:

Since the Muslims nowadays live in Dar al-Kufr [land of disbelief], because they are governed with laws other than the revelation of Allah (swt), so their land resembles Makkah [Mecca] where the Messenger of Allah (saw) was first sent as a Messenger. Therefore, it is necessary to take the Makkan part of the Messenger of Allah’s seerah as an example in conveying the da’wah…

…following the example of the Messenger of Allah (saw) who restricted himself in Makkah solely to the da’wah and he (saw) did not carry out any material actions until he had migrated to Madinah [Medina]. And when the people of the second pledge of ‘Aqabah proposed that he give them permission to fight the people of Mina with the sword, he answered them saying: “We have not been ordered to do that yet”…

So the party sees itself in the ‘Meccan’ stage.  This stage is pre-violent:  note Muhammad said that the sword hadn’t been ordered “yet.”  HuT leaves room for speculation what specifically must happen to reach the ‘Medina,’ or violent, stage of jihad. Even though the group claims to be in a pre-violent mode, it still sees itself as conducting jihad,  HuT America states:

The fact that the Party does not use material power to defend itself or as a weapon against the rulers is of no relevance to the subject of jihad, because jihad has to continue till the Day of Judgment. So whenever the disbelieving enemies attack an Islamic country it becomes compulsory on its Muslim citizens to repel the enemy. The members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in that country are a part of the Muslims and it is obligatory upon them as it is upon other Muslims, in their capacity as Muslims, to fight the enemy and repel them. Whenever there is a Muslim amir who declares jihad to enhance the Word of Allah (swt) and mobilizes the people to do that, the members of Hizb ut-Tahrir will respond in their capacity as Muslims in the country where the general call to arms was proclaimed.

This is the same kind of rhetoric terrorist groups such as al Qaeda used in justifying attacks on U.S. military personnel for having a military presence in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf War.  Indeed, al Qaeda’s leaders Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed were both former members of HuT.  The organization is often said to provide a “conveyor belt” to violent jihad.

Sometimes their rhetoric strays even closer to the line between violent and pre-violent jihad.  In March, a leader of Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia, Ismail Al-Wahwah, reminded Muslims of their duty to restore the caliphate.  He called upon Muslims to raise the banner of Islam, restore Sharia, unite the ummah and “to lead the armies of Jihad that will conquer Europe and America.”  HuT claims a ‘commitment’ to non-violence, but that is only a tactical claim aimed at securing the protections of Western freedoms of speech and association.

How, though, can anyone devoted to Western freedom and liberty think that such a group will not ultimately undermine those very freedoms?  Like the Muslim Brotherhood, HuT does not want to build a common society for both Muslims and non-Muslims.  They want sharia law.  As we have discovered, Hizb ut-Tahrir is a threat to Canada and the rest of the free world.  It’s time Canada realized that radical Islam represents a severe danger.

The Brotherhood in Europe

Many Brotherhood their leaders immigrated to Europe because the group was suppressed in Egypt following their attempt to overthrow the Nasser government. Foolishly, the CIA saw them as a partner in the Cold War against a godless Soviet Bloc.
