On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, Muslim students and student activists from San Diego State University (SDSU) held a demonstration against the university for allowing fliers created by the Horowitz Freedom Center to be distributed on campus accusing named Muslim student activists of affiliating with terrorists in support of Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) campaigns against Israel.

Students from the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) confronted SDSU President Elliot Hirshman and refused to let him leave. The MSA and SJP activists targeted Hirshman for his stance on the fliers, after the Student Union issued an email saying they supported “the rights of all parties to voice their opinions.”

The MSA and other student groups on campus claim they were targeted for their support of the BDS Movement.

For his own safety Hirshman had to be placed in a police car for an hour until the crowd calmed down When Hirshman addressed the students he apologized if the university inadvertently upset people He also agreed to meet with Muslim students next week to further discuss the situation.

In February 2015, SDSU was ranked 6^th on a list of the most anti-Semitic college campuses. San Diego Jewish World has reported that SDSU fell into the highest figures for anti-Semitism including engaging in the targeting of Jewish students, verbal expressions of anti-Semitism, and BDS activity.

SDSU’s history of anti-Semitism has been documented for some time.

In October 15, 2009 a Nazi swastika with “White Power” written on campus parking lot wall. In September of 2013 a professor teaching an Arabic Language course passed out a map in class listing Israel as Palestine. In April of 2015 the social media app Yik-Yak lit up with anti-Jewish rhetoric such as “Heil Hitler” and “SDSU Divest so we can get rid of these Jews.” In October 12, 2015: SJP at SDSU allowed convicted and deported terrorist Rasmeah Odeh to serve as a key speaker, during the SJP national conference, which was held at SDSU in October of last year.

SJP was noted for it’s close to ties to organizations linked to Hamas during a Congressional hearing on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign held last week.

SDSU is not the only university experiencing increased anti-Semitism while pro-Muslim student groups seize power. In California, major state universities including UCLA and UC-Berkeley, home of some of the earliest campus MSAs, have seen increased cases of anti-Semitism.

The Muslim Students Association is recognized as one of the earliest organizations’ linked to the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States. In 1996 an MSA handbook was published explicitly calling for campus MSAs to “islamicize the politics of their respective university” and calling for the MSA to be “a more ‘In-your-face’ association.”

Clearly, the aggressive mob tactics displayed against SDSU President Hirshman, and the growing trend of anti-Semitism at San Diego State University is a sad but accurate reflection of the successful effort to “islamicize” campus politics and “get in the faces” of those who dare stand up to the BDS movement.
