FBI: Minnesota Mall Attacks “Consistent With the Philosophies of Violent Radical Islamic Groups”

What would you do if you saw someone in a security uniform coming at you with a knife?

The information discovered by the FBI in its investigation of the background of an attack on a mall in Minnesota suggests jihad.  FBI Special Agent Rick Thornton told reporters that the attacker, one Dahir Ahmed Adan, showed every sign of being an ordinary college boy until recently.  After he started reading the Quran in the several months predating the attack, he progressively became less interested in playing video games, or physical sports, and “went from being an excellent student with a GPA to flunking out of college almost overnight.”

By itself that suggests a strong influence, but the FBI agent was not finished.  “We have numerous credible witness accounts of him asking victims during the attack if they were Muslim,” Agent Thornton reminded the reporters, “and at least one instance of him yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ while stabbing one of his victims, and others heard him yelling ‘Islam, Islam.'”

Citing “compelling evidence” that the attack was provoked, Thornton added dryly, “one could reasonably conclude his actions were consistent with the philosophies of violent radical Islamic groups.”

Indeed, that may be the understatement of the year.  From the Washington Mall to Europe, this philosophy of bringing violent jihad to the peaceful West is clear enough.  Homeland Security just put out a report that the Islamic State (ISIS) has been calling for knife attacks in random places, and targeting random persons such as “someone walking alone in a public park or rural forested area, or someone by himself in an alley close to a night club or another place of debauchery, or even someone out for a walk in a quiet neighborhood. One should consider canals, riversides, and beaches.”

There is a further problem raised by the use of a security uniform.  As Paul Sperry reported exclusively here at CounterJihad, there is evidence that jihadists are targeting police and security services here in America.  That mirrors a trend in Europe, where radicals have been infiltrating targets such as the Brussels airport before their attacks.  Belgian police found that at least 50 supporters of ISIS worked for the airport in Brussels.

The claim comes from an open letter where police officers say they flagged individuals to authorities on numerous occasions before the attack. ISIS supporters work as baggage handlers, cleaners and catering staff, according to the officers, which give them access to planes. Some employees were removed when it became known they had received training in Syria.  Individuals openly cheered after the Nov. 13 Paris attacks, but they were allowed to keep their jobs.

These are people trusted behind the security perimeters. What happens when they are also the ones manning the security perimeters?

A great deal of the stability and peace of our societies depends on the fact that we are able to trust that a man in a police uniform is a police officer, and that a police officer believes in the law.  Security guards enjoy a lesser, derived respect.  There is a great danger that emerges when you cannot trust that the people in uniform, with weapons, are on the side of the law.  How much more fraught relations between the citizen and the government becomes when the uniform is no longer a safe and reliable symbol of the legal order.  Attackers wearing false uniforms are committing the war crime of perfidy, which endangers the whole society by undermining the respect for the uniform itself.

The attack in Minnesota unifies both of these terrorizing trends — the random knife attack in the name of Islam, and the use of a security uniform.  What would you do in the face of such a thing?  Have you begun to consider how to prepare?
